The Jackpot Now Stands At: $2.5 Trillion

For those who are keeping track of such things, the cost of this "amnesty" bill that is being ramrodded through Congress is roughly $2.5 trillion. That cost is easy to figure out when you take into account the fact that from 12 to 20 million people will be flooding America's welfare, Social Security, medicare and medicaid systems. Roughly half of the illegal criminal aliens who will magically become US citizes do not have a high school degree. That means those people can't speak English, and English is a prime requisite to find work in this country; at least work that will lead to greater opportunities. Those people will not be able to find work--first in line for welfare. Aliens who are already nearing the age of retirement will be at the front of the line for SSI benefits.

All of this is bad enough, but the bill is being pushed through against the will of the people. Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff has recently equated amnesty with anything short of capital punishment when pertaining to the illegal alien issue. Senators Graham and Chambliss were roundly booes at the Republican convention when trying to cover their own position; not coming out and saying that those same senators are in the hip pocket of big businesses who think that they need cheap labor. Of course, even if they were to say exactly that it wouldn't matter anyway.

Any Congressman or Senator that votes in favor of this bill that trivializes the immigration process, and slaps the face of the good people who are trying to do things the right way--those are the people who are selling out the future of this country for political expediency, and they must be stopped.

That number can't be right. Common sense would tell you that a $2.5 trillion "increase in cost" for 20 million people doesn't make sense when you consider the entire federal budget of $2.9 trillion that takes care of 300 million, many of who take advantage of the same services.

Are you sure the number isn't $2.5 billion? I don't think that number would be right either, but it's at lease reasonable.

I'm quite sure. I heard the number on the radio, and a search on Google of "immigration cost, $2.5 trillion" shows that $2.5 trillion will be spent on Social Security alone.

I'm happy to argue the issues with you, but I'm getting tired of this "I don't believe the numbers you're putting up" shtick.

I tend not to believe numbers that don't make sense. That's because numbers lie.

Like that 2.5 trillion one.

I did the search myself, the first result explained how that number was figured out. For one thing, that's a cost spread out over several years.

Supposedly the 2.5 trillion dollars is the estimated amount illegal immigrants would receive in Social Security benefits when they retire. It assumes all illegal immigrants will be net takers from the system rather than net payers, and assumes they all live exactly 18 years after receiving benefits. Pretty strong assumptions to base the amount on.

And completely worthless. This may shock and amaze most people, but these benefits that illegal aliens will supposedly all of a sudden be eligible for...they're already eligible for them now!. They already get welfare, Medicaid, and are eligible for Social Security and SSI when they retire (if they paid into the system, which most do). The cost of illegals may well be 2.5 trillion dollars (spread out over 18 years), and I certainly think something needs to be done about the money we're spending, but it's not going to be an additional cost because of amnesty. We'll pay it one way or another.

That's why I'm skeptical of numbers. Ever since I learned 40% of sick days were on Monday and Friday, I've learned they can be manipulated.

Except I never said that it was an additional cost. I think you hide behind this smoke screen because you're soft on immigration and don't want to admit it. This is the same thing that happened in the nickname thread; you pull out some insane comparison that doesn't work and expect it to fly.

I don't think it's that far-fetched to believe that any illegal alien who puts down roots will take advantage of SSI. They've already nicked us once, what's another cheat?

I agree, numbers are a tricky business and are dangerous if you don't understand them, but you're out of luck on this one.
